CYBERJAYA, June 1 — Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil has directed the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to review the significant gap in 4G Coverage of Populated Areas (CoPA) across different telcos, despite the country achieving an overall 92 per cent coverage.

He noted disparities where some providers offer only 76 per cent coverage while others reach up to 86 per cent, stressing the need for equitable access nationwide and improved transparency through detailed, state-level CoPA reports.

Fahmi also highlighted the upcoming Online Safety Act (OnSA) 2024 as a critical step in making social media platforms more accountable, particularly in combating scams and harmful content. He pointed to Facebook’s inaction on paid scam ads as an example of why stronger regulations are essential.

Once enforced, OnSA will compel platforms to ensure user safety, protect minors, and establish clear reporting mechanisms for harmful content.
