Nikon is preparing to shake up the cinema camera market with the upcoming release of the Nikon Zr (or ZR), a video-centric Z-mount model that incorporates RED digital cinema technology. According to reliable sources, the camera is designed with a brick-like body—lacking both a pentaprism and electronic viewfinder—reminiscent of a hybrid between Nikon’s Z30, Sony’s FX3, and RED’s compact systems.

This marks Nikon’s boldest move yet in the professional video production space. Internally, the Nikon Zr is expected to be powered by the same sensor found in the upcoming Z6 III, optimized for cinema-level performance. RED’s influence is said to go beyond mere branding, with many of its signature video technologies integrated directly into the camera’s hardware and software.

A significantly large LCD screen will enhance usability on set, reinforcing its purpose-built design for filmmakers and content creators. While not a RED camera with a Nikon Z-mount, the Zr represents a true collaboration between Nikon’s imaging heritage and RED’s cinematic expertise. The official unveiling is anticipated in the third or fourth quarter of 2025, signaling Nikon’s intent to become a major player in the digital cinema arena.
