KUALA LUMPUR, May 29 – Microsoft has officially launched its first cloud region in Malaysia — the Malaysia West cloud region — marking a pivotal step in advancing the nation’s digital and AI transformation. Located in Greater Kuala Lumpur, the new AI-ready hyperscale cloud infrastructure features three availability zones and offers enterprise-grade cloud services with in-country data residency, enhanced security, and low latency.

The initiative supports Microsoft’s Trusted Cloud Principles and aligns with Malaysia’s digital ambitions, with government support underscoring the nation’s commitment to becoming a regional digital and AI leader. Major organizations including PETRONAS, TNG Digital, and SIRIM Berhad are already leveraging the new cloud region to scale operations, boost innovation, and drive digital resilience.

Microsoft also unveiled “BINA AI Malaysia,” a national initiative aimed at accelerating AI adoption, talent development, and cross-sector collaboration, including plans to establish the Microsoft National AI Innovation Center with key partners such as EY, NAIO, and PETRONAS Leadership Centre. In parallel, Microsoft is advancing its AIForMYFuture program, which aims to equip 800,000 Malaysians with AI-related skills by the end of 2025.

As of May 2025, over 400,000 individuals have already benefited from the initiative, spanning public and private sectors, educational institutions, and underserved communities. Microsoft Malaysia’s Managing Director Laurence Si emphasized the company’s long-term commitment to empowering local businesses and talent, saying, “We are not just building infrastructure—we’re building the future of Malaysia’s AI economy.”
