Malaysia has become a global pioneer in content governance with the launch of the Guidelines for Reporting and Sharing of Suicide-Related Content, unveiled by Minister of Communications YB Datuk Fahmi Fadzil on 3 June 2025.
Developed by the Communications and Multimedia Content Forum (CMCF) through an inclusive, multi-stakeholder process, the guidelines set a new national benchmark for how suicide is covered across traditional and digital media, promoting sensitivity, accuracy, and public well-being.
Designed to address both professional journalism and user-generated content, the guidelines emphasize ethical storytelling, responsible sharing, and inclusion of mental health resources.
With support from the Ministry of Health, media experts, mental health advocates, and individuals with lived experience, the framework reflects Malaysia’s whole-of-society approach to suicide prevention.
Malaysia’s leadership in this effort will be showcased at the upcoming International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) World Congress 2025 in Vienna.
