GEORGE TOWN, June 11 — Physical works for the Penang Mutiara Light Rail Transit (LRT) project are set to begin in July or August, marking a major step forward for the long-anticipated RM10.5 billion infrastructure initiative.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook confirmed today that all technical and administrative hurdles between the federal and state governments have been resolved. Speaking during a site visit to the Rapid On-Demand (RoD) service, Loke announced that piling works will commence soon, with tenders already awarded to subcontractors.

He stressed the need for a comprehensive traffic diversion plan during construction to minimise disruptions, noting that while some congestion is expected, mitigation strategies will be put in place. The 29.5km LRT line will feature 21 stations, connecting the southern and northeastern parts of Penang Island and linking to the mainland.

Loke also highlighted the ongoing success of the RoD service, which now operates 50 vans across 13 zones and serves nearly 2,000 passengers daily, helping improve last-mile connectivity and promoting public transport use statewide.
