GEORGE TOWN, July 5 — Professor Dato’ Dr. Aileen Tan Shau Hwai of Universiti Sains Malaysia has received the esteemed Anton Bruun Medal at the 33rd IOC-UNESCO Assembly in Paris, recognising her global impact in marine science and coastal community empowerment.
As Director of USM’s Centre for Marine and Coastal Studies (CEMACS), her work in sustainable aquaculture and community-driven conservation stood out on the world stage. Delivering the Anton Bruun Memorial Lecture, Prof. Aileen advocated for science that empowers people and protects nature.
Her Malaysia-based initiatives, including oyster farming and youth eco-entrepreneurship, showcase how science can translate into real-world benefits, earning Malaysia global praise in the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.
