SEBERANG PERAI, August 8 – Penang has intensified its crackdown on smoking at eateries, with 2,647 fines issued to patrons and 137 notices to business operators who failed to comply with no-smoking regulations.
State exco for health, youth and sports Daniel Gooi Zi Sen said enforcement under the Control of Smoking Products for Public Health Act 2024 (Act 852) is being reinforced through increased manpower and coordinated inspections by the state health department.
Speaking during the BeBas Walkabout at Bandar Cassia R&R and Batu Kawan Borealis Commercial Centre, Gooi emphasised that both food hygiene and smoking enforcement require a whole-of-government approach.
Calling on NGOs, associations, and the public to support a healthier dining environment. He also noted that compliant premises may qualify for the Clean and Safe (BeSS) certification, recognising their commitment to food safety and smoke-free standards.
