GEORGE TOWN, September 2 — Penang’s medical technology (medtech) sector is gaining momentum as one of the state’s fastest-growing industries, fuelled by global demand, strong local expertise, and a mature industrial ecosystem.
InvestPenang CEO Datuk Loo Lee Lian said the state’s precision engineering and automation capabilities, honed through decades in the semiconductor industry, have been pivotal in producing high-accuracy surgical instruments, implants, and medical devices.
She described medtech as a “hidden gem” offering steady growth, higher margins, and greater job stability compared to the cyclical semiconductor sector, making it an attractive field for talent and investment.
Penang’s medtech growth is also boosted by its synergy with the electrical and electronics sector, enabling the production of sophisticated devices such as pacemakers, glucose monitors, and diagnostic systems.
While homegrown firms like Straits Orthopaedics and UWC Healthcare are already serving global markets, the sector faces challenges including US trade restrictions, geopolitical tensions, and supply chain disruptions.
Despite these hurdles, Loo remains optimistic, expecting more global players to establish operations in Penang over the next five years, particularly in high-end medical devices, while strengthening the role of local companies in the international supply chain.
