KUALA LUMPUR, August 23 — Homegrown burger chain myBurgerLab has terminated the employment of its chief operating officer Andrew Chong following backlash over his social media remarks on Terengganu’s fine against Muslim men who skip Friday prayers without valid reasons.

The company said Chong’s comments, which were later deleted, did not reflect its values of respect, unity, and inclusivity, adding that it was “deeply saddened” by the hurt caused to the Muslim community.

In an official statement, myBurgerLab apologised and pledged corrective action, including mandatory cultural sensitivity training for all staff with guidance from the Islamic Development Department Malaysia (Jakim) within 30 days.

The brand also vowed greater vigilance to maintain harmony and inclusivity, stressing that it condemned all forms of discrimination or disrespect toward religion. Chong, who had earlier issued a personal apology, said he accepted and respected the company’s decision to remove him.
