GEORGE TOWN, September 26 — Penang’s rich cultural heritage took the global spotlight at the Osaka World Expo 2025 during Penang Week, where daily kebaya and batik fashion shows at the Malaysia Pavilion drew packed crowds, with international visitors captivated by the elegance of traditional attire.

Penang State Executive Councillor for Tourism and Creative Economy, Wong Hon Wai, highlighted that the kebaya, recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2024, was proudly showcased on an international stage to strengthen Penang’s cultural reputation.

Alongside this, Malaysia’s breakfast culture—also a UNESCO-recognized heritage—delighted audiences with nasi lemak, roti canai, and a crowd-pleasing “Roti Canai Terbang” demonstration by Penang chefs Aiman and Muiz.

Wong noted that the overwhelming response, from eager audiences photographing kebaya models to long queues for traditional breakfasts, proved the global appeal of Penang’s intangible heritage.

He emphasized that these showcases not only charmed international visitors but also created lasting impressions that could inspire future travel to Penang, further boosting the state’s cultural tourism profile.
