KUALA LUMPUR, October 10 — The Malaysian government has announced the MADANI Submarine Cable System (SALAM), a RM2 billion project spanning 3,190 kilometres to enhance digital connectivity between Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia.
Developed by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), the cable will run from Sedili, Johor, to Kuching and Sibu in Sarawak, before extending to Tuaran, Kudat, Pulau Banggi, Sandakan, and Tawau in Sabah.
Once completed, SALAM is expected to deliver faster, more stable internet access to communities across Borneo, closing the digital divide between regions. Meanwhile, Malaysia’s startup ecosystem continues to thrive, contributing RM1 billion to the national GDP and generating over 82,000 jobs.
In Budget 2026, the government announced an increase in the KWAP Pioneer Fund and Jelawang Capital to RM750 million, alongside a RM55 million allocation for Cradle Fund to support tech innovation.
The government also plans to enhance venture capital tax incentives for up to ten years, encouraging greater investment in the local startup landscape.
