GEORGE TOWN, October 15 — Penang has recorded a rise in influenza and respiratory infection clusters to a cumulative total of 36 as of epidemiological week 41 (Oct 5–10), with cases reported across kindergartens, schools, and higher learning institutions.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the increase, from 10 clusters in week 40 to 17 in week 41, remains under control as no fatalities or new virus mutations have been detected. Based on data from the state health department, week 40 alone saw 418 reported cases, while nationwide influenza cases reached around 6,000 in the same period.
Chow advised the public to remain vigilant, emphasizing preventive measures such as wearing masks and staying home when experiencing symptoms. “Those who are unwell should avoid attending school or going to public areas to prevent further spread,” he said.
The Chief Minister reaffirmed that health authorities are closely monitoring the situation and that proactive containment measures have helped keep the outbreak manageable.
