GEORGE TOWN, October 31 – All 1,201 flood evacuees from 333 families in Penang have safely returned home within three days after last week’s heavy rain caused flooding in parts of North Seberang Perai, Central Seberang Perai, and the South-west district.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said seven temporary evacuation centres were opened on October 24 and closed by October 27, adding that the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) will soon distribute financial assistance to eligible victims.
Meanwhile, cleanup and slope stabilization works are still underway along Jalan Tun Sardon, which remains closed following a landslide. The Public Works Department (JKR) has cleared large rocks and fallen trees at critical points, though persistent rain has temporarily halted some debris and rock-breaking activities.
Contractors are currently reinforcing the slope with protective coverings to prevent further movement. The state government expects full restoration of the road once weather conditions improve and repairs, including concrete embankments, are completed.
