KUALA LUMPUR, November 5 — Malaysian rapper Wee Meng Chee, popularly known as Namewee, surrendered himself to police early this morning amid an ongoing murder investigation into the death of Taiwanese influencer Hsieh Yu-hsin, also known as Iris Hsieh.
The 42-year-old artist arrived at Bukit Aman police headquarters around 1am this morning, accompanied by his lawyer and several associates, following nearly 24 hours without contact. Police confirmed that Namewee remains in custody as part of the probe.
Which has been reclassified as murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code. Hsieh, 31, was found dead in a Kuala Lumpur hotel on October 22, prompting a nationwide search for the rapper after he was named a person of interest.
In a Facebook post prior to his surrender, Namewee said he had travelled from Johor Bahru to Kuala Lumpur to make a police report and provide a statement, assuring the public that he would cooperate fully and not evade authorities.
“I have always presented myself voluntarily whenever called upon,” he wrote, adding that he hoped the investigation would bring clarity to both the public and the victim’s family. Police reports earlier revealed that controlled substances, including suspected ecstasy tablets, were found at the hotel.
With the rapper’s urine tests returning positive for multiple drugs. Investigations into the case are ongoing.
