GEORGE TOWN, November 11 — The sovereignty of Penang is clearly enshrined in the Federal Constitution of 1957, said Penang State Executive Councillor for Tourism and Creative Economy Wong Hon Wai, reaffirming the state’s equal status within the Federation of Malaysia.

Citing Article 1(2) of the Constitution, Wong stressed that Penang is listed as one of the states forming the Federation, on par with all other states, marking a clear and binding legal recognition of its sovereignty.

He said the Federal Constitution of 1957 represents a new chapter that supersedes all prior historical documents, rendering any pre-independence agreements or arrangements obsolete. “The Constitution itself affirms Penang’s rightful place in the Federation. It is the supreme law of the land,” Wong said in a statement today.

Commenting on Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor’s recent remarks about Penang’s historical ties with Kedah, Wong said it was regrettable that such an issue — dating back over 200 years — was being revived.

“The Kedah MB should focus his efforts on attracting investments and planning his state’s development rather than initiating an unproductive polemic,” he said.
