GEORGE TOWN, November 18 – Penang is gearing up to become a premier concert tourism destination with the opening of the Penang Waterfront Convention Centre (PWCC), a newly completed 10,000-seater venue that state executive councillor for tourism and creative economy Wong Hon Wai says will finally enable the state to host large-scale international concerts.

Speaking at the state legislative assembly, he noted that existing venues such as Padang Kota Lama, Setia SPICE Convention Centre and SPICE Arena have long supported major events but are limited in capacity, making PWCC a game-changing catalyst for attracting more world-class performances.

Recent concerts—including Ella’s Jilid Akhir: Puteri Kota and Afgan Live in Penang—demonstrate the strong demand for live entertainment in the state, while radio-station collaborations like 988’s After Work Fest 2025 and MYFM’s Big Show 2025 have further highlighted Penang’s potential.

Wong added that mega concerts bring significant economic spillover benefits by drawing visitors from across Malaysia and overseas, directly boosting hotel occupancy and spending in food and beverage, transport, retail and entertainment sectors.

He said the state is also expanding its tourism appeal beyond concerts, with new eco-tourism initiatives promoted by Penang Global Tourism, upgraded facilities at Penang National Park, the launch of the Penang Hill Hiking Trails app, and unique offerings such as Entopia’s world-first biofluorescent night experience.

Additionally, the RM80 million Lin Xiang Xiong Art Gallery—slated to open in December at The Light Waterfront—will enhance Penang’s cultural landscape, while Seberang Perai’s expanded eco-tourism development, including the Penang River Cruise and TAT-KM bird habitat initiatives, reinforces the state’s diversified tourism strategy.

He said these combined efforts strengthen Penang’s overall vision of becoming a vibrant regional hub for arts, culture, concerts and nature-based tourism, ultimately broadening its brand and attracting new investments in the creative, leisure and tourism sectors.
