KUALA LUMPUR, November 21 – A fraudulent message claiming that “13,999 Maxis points will expire today” is circulating among mobile users, prompting warnings after verification confirmed it to be a scam.

The message, which urges recipients to redeem their so-called points via a suspicious link (vipcenter-mymx.space), has been confirmed fake following a call to Maxis customer service. Maxis has clarified that it does not use such domains for redemptions, nor does it send urgent expiry notices demanding immediate action.

Customers are strongly advised not to click the link, not to provide any personal information, and to delete the message immediately. Maxis encourages users to verify any reward notifications through the official Maxis App or by contacting its customer care hotline directly.

In a related development, authorities have crippled a syndicate responsible for spreading fraudulent SMS through illegal telecommunication equipment known as Fake Base Transceiver Stations (Fake BTS). Under Op Pancing, a joint operation by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), an individual operating a mobile Fake BTS device near a Kuala Lumpur mall was arrested.

The equipment was found actively transmitting phishing links and gambling-related messages to unsuspecting victims. A subsequent raid on a house in Kota Kemuning uncovered multiple vehicles and communication devices linked to the syndicate, along with 45 seized items worth an estimated RM100,000.

Initial investigations revealed that the syndicate had begun modifying Fake BTS units for mobile deployment, enabling them to move between locations undetected. The case is now being investigated under Section 239(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which carries penalties of up to RM1 million in fines or 10 years’ imprisonment.

As well as Regulation 34(5)(c) of the Communications and Multimedia (Spectrum) Regulations 2000, which provides for additional fines or imprisonment. Authorities urge the public to remain vigilant, report suspicious messages, and refrain from interacting with unknown links.
