GEORGE TOWN, January 1 — The Penang City Council has instructed Gurney Paragon Mall (GPM) to install larger and clearer pet-friendly signage at all entrances and lifts, following public concern over the mall’s policy.

The council also reiterated that only pets weighing 15kg and below are allowed, and that animals must be kept in a stroller or carrier at all times, with pet access restricted to Tuesdays and Wednesdays only.

The directive came after a site visit by the mayor and council representatives, amid controversy sparked by a social media post from a Muslim shopper who said they were unaware of the mall’s pet-friendly status.

The council stressed that GPM’s management is responsible for enforcing its house rules, which include the use of designated pet-friendly lifts, mandatory pet diapers and proper waste disposal.

While noting that the council is currently reviewing the suitability of pet-friendly mall policies to balance public interest and social harmony.
