PUTRAJAYA, January 3 — The Ministry of Education is considering standardising school uniforms nationwide to eliminate colour variations between schools and promote a stronger sense of unity among students.
Director-General of Education Dr Mohd Azam Ahmad said the proposal, under review since September with input from multiple stakeholders, aims to reduce excessive uniform designs that emphasise differences and competition, adding that a final decision is expected by August 2026.
He said phased implementation could begin in 2027 starting with Year One and Form One students, noting that some schools currently require uniforms with more than seven colours and multiple outfits for different activities.
Creating financial strain for parents and difficulties for students who transfer mid-year. Mohd Azam added that uniform policies would be introduced gradually through discussions with parent-teacher associations, taking into account parents’ costs and student comfort in Malaysia’s hot climate.
