JOHOR BAHRU, January 8 – Johor is intensifying efforts to strengthen ByteDance’s long-term commitment to the state following high-level discussions in China, as part of the global technology firm’s data centre investment in Malaysia valued at more than RM29.5 billion.
Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi said he met ByteDance representatives on December 23, 2025, reaffirming Johor’s position not merely as an infrastructure host but as a strategic digital partner capable of supporting large-scale, secure and sustainable operations.
He noted that Johor’s strategic Asean location, competitive costs and access to regional markets place it well to support ByteDance’s growth in Southeast Asia, building on its existing data centre at Sedenak Tech Park in Kulai.
Beyond infrastructure, discussions also explored future collaboration in regional operations, artificial intelligence and digital content ecosystem development, which Onn Hafiz said could further position Johor as a safe, resilient and competitive regional digital hub.
