PUTRAJAYA, January 5 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today announced that the government will table a Bill in the upcoming Parliament session to limit the tenure of the prime minister to a maximum of 10 years or two terms, reviving a major reform pledge under Pakatan Harapan.
Speaking at a New Year’s special assembly here, Anwar said the proposed legislation aims to strengthen democratic governance and ensure leadership accountability, adding that all positions of power should have clear term limits.
Anwar, who is also finance minister, said the Bill is expected to be presented during the Parliament sitting at the end of January, alongside another proposed law to separate the powers of the attorney general and the public prosecutor.
He reiterated his earlier support for constitutional amendments on term limits, stressing that broad bipartisan support is crucial to ensure the reform can be successfully enacted.
