KUALA LUMPUR, February 6 — The Malaysian government is investing RM242 million to enhance MetMalaysia’s early warning systems, aiming to speed up earthquake and tsunami alerts from eight minutes to six minutes and improve weather forecast accuracy from 82% to 85%.

Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup said the upgrades include new radar and forecasting projects, the Radar Integrated Nowcasting System (RANS) for near-real-time rainfall predictions.

And High-Performance Computing with AI and machine learning to deliver more precise 14-day forecasts. In addition, RM18 million under the 13th Malaysia Plan will support the National Tsunami Early Warning System.

While MetMalaysia continues to operate 24/7 and shares real-time rainfall data with agencies such as the Department of Irrigation and Drainage to strengthen flood forecasting. All alerts and forecasts are made available via the Met API and the public sector open data portal.
