KUALA LUMPUR, January 27 — The Malaysian government is conducting a public consultation on a proposal to limit the tenure of the Prime Minister as part of its MADANI Institutional Reform Agenda aimed at strengthening governance, accountability, and institutional stability.
The study explores options such as setting a maximum number of terms or years in office, considering implications for administrative continuity, and safeguarding the role and powers of the Constitutional Monarchy.
The public opinion survey, running from Jan 21 to Jan 28, 2026, seeks input from Members of Parliament, civil servants, civil society, and the general public to ensure any policy decision is evidence-based and balanced.
Officials emphasised that feedback collected will inform policy considerations and does not imply that any decision on term limits has been finalised.
