KUALA LUMPUR, January 29 – Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching announced that Malaysia will introduce an age verification system to prevent those aged 16 and below from accessing social media accounts.

Using tools such as MyDigital ID, MyKad, or passports. The verification process will focus solely on confirming age, without collecting personal account or user details, and is part of compliance under the Online Safety Act 2025.

Teo explained that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is currently testing the feasibility of these mechanisms through a Regulatory Sandbox, collaborating with social media platforms to assess technological accuracy, data protection, privacy, and AI-driven content monitoring.

Once implemented, social media providers will be responsible for enforcing age restrictions and ensuring user safety, while the government continues to refine complaint-handling and regulatory processes.
