PETALING JAYA, February 1 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has firmly denied any association with the late US financier Jeffrey Epstein after his name appeared in a resurfaced email exchange dated February 2012 that has recently gone viral.
In a brief Facebook post on Sunday, Anwar said he only became aware that an unnamed individual had mentioned his name in correspondence linked to the Epstein case, stressing that he has “absolutely no connection whatsoever” with Epstein or the parties involved in the email exchange.
The email, released as part of millions of documents published by the US Department of Justice, was political in nature and did not involve allegations of sexual misconduct. It discussed a possible meeting between Epstein, a redacted individual and another person.
With references to Anwar’s political prospects at the time and claims that Malaysia could become a “gold mine” for foreign investment should he become prime minister. Local media reported that the individual referred to as “Jes” is believed to be former JP Morgan banker Jes Staley.
Anwar emphasised that the email dates back more than a decade and reiterated that he had no involvement in or knowledge of the correspondence. His response comes amid renewed public attention following the release of the Epstein-related files.
Which have reignited global scrutiny of individuals named in historical documents connected to the disgraced financier, who died in 2019.
