BAYAN LEPAS, February 4 — Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow has brushed aside calls by PAS for his first deputy chief minister, Datuk Mohamad Abdul Hamid, to resign over allegations of zakat fund misuse linked to a land purchase.

Saying the issue had already been raised and explained during the Penang state assembly sitting in November. Chow said the explanation given at the time was accepted based on assessments by the relevant departments, adding that such political demands were not unusual.

He stressed that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has begun investigating the matter and the state government would not interfere, emphasising that the administration adheres to the rule of law.

Chow said there was no need for Mohamad to resign at this stage, while Mohamad has denied any wrongdoing and described the allegations as politically motivated, as the Penang Islamic Religious Council confirmed its cooperation with the ongoing MACC probe and rejected claims circulating online.
