KUALA LUMPUR, February 8 — The chairman of IJM Corporation Bhd, in his 70s, was briefly detained by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) over alleged offences under the MACC Act 2009 and the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.

Before being released within 24 hours due to health concerns, MACC senior director Datuk Mohamad Zamri Zainul Abidin confirmed. The investigation, which began on January 19, focuses on alleged irregularities in corporate governance, procurement, financial transactions.

And the ownership of overseas assets estimated at RM2.5 billion, with 70 bank accounts frozen and 15 individuals, including the chairman’s wife, questioned as part of the probe. MACC conducted searches at the chairman’s residence, an investment bank, a fund management institution.

Two other locations, noting that the investment bank had been appointed to manage a takeover offer involving IJM Corporation, including regulatory matters with a self-funded statutory body. Preliminary investigations suggest potential money laundering.

The commission will continue tracing assets and taking further action as necessary, with the probe remaining active.
