KUALA LUMPUR, February 11 — Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil today urged parents to take an active role in monitoring their children’s internet use, stressing that digital devices should not be treated as “babysitters” amid rising cybercrime risks.
Speaking at the launch of Safer Internet Day 2026, he said children — especially those below 16 — are vulnerable to online scams, cyberbullying and data exploitation if left unsupervised, adding that parents must set usage limits, safety controls and ensure online activities do not disrupt education.
Fahmi said the government will intensify efforts to promote safer internet use as cybercrime shifts from physical to digital spaces, citing cases of online harassment, scams and child sexual exploitation. Beyond improving coverage and speed, he said user safety is now a top priority.
Supported by stronger laws such as amendments to the Communications and Multimedia Act. Expanded community outreach, and nationwide awareness campaigns involving schools, neighbourhood groups and religious institutions to ensure digital safety messages reach families across the country.
