KUALA LUMPUR, March 3 – On February 23, 2026, YAB Tuan Chow Kon Yeow, Member of Parliament for P.046 Batu Kawan, delivered a speech in the Dewan Rakyat supporting the 2026 Constitutional Amendment Bill to limit the tenure of the Prime Minister.
Highlighting the importance of institutional reform, Chow emphasized that a fixed 10-year term strengthens parliamentary democracy, ensures orderly power transitions, and enhances accountability. Drawing from Penang’s precedent as the first state to impose a term limit on the Chief Minister.
He argued that a fixed tenure provides clarity, avoiding ambiguities caused by early elections or political maneuvering. Chow also praised the retroactive provision in the bill, noting that it demonstrates the Prime Minister’s commitment to accountability and reform.
Even when it may affect incumbents personally. He concluded that the amendment reflects principled leadership, prioritizing national interest over personal gain, and serves to reinforce the integrity and credibility of Malaysia’s democratic institutions.
