KUALA LUMPUR, March 6 – Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching said the misuse of artificial intelligence, particularly deepfake technology targeting women, is becoming increasingly concerning in Malaysia.

She revealed that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) had submitted 6,987 content takedown requests to social media platforms from Jan 1, 2024 to March 1, 2026, with 95 per cent or 6,657 posts successfully removed.

The requests involved inappropriate AI-generated content, many of which victimised women. Speaking during the 115th International Women’s Day celebration at UCSI University in Kuala Lumpur, Teo said enforcement under the Online Safety Act 2025.

Will begin this year to strengthen user protection. She added that the framework will hold platform providers accountable and ensure harmful content, including those exploiting women and children, can be removed more quickly while promoting responsible use of technology.
