GEORGE TOWN, March 13 – The Penang government will allow landowners facing financial difficulties to pay their land tax by instalments within the same year, subject to approval from the Land Administrator.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the decision was made after public feedback and appeals following the revised 2026 land tax structure.

Applications for instalment payments for 2026 must be submitted before May 31, while requests for future years must be made before April 30 annually.

Chow said the state has received over 1,000 appeals from landowners, many related to higher tax rates following land reassessments based on current usage.

The state government has also introduced refinements, including calculating commercial and industrial land tax based on actual land area.

Adjustments were also made for quarry operators and fruit farmers to ensure a fairer and more consistent land taxation system.
