KUALA LUMPUR, March 28 — Malaysians have been urged to reduce water usage immediately as a prolonged heatwave strains supply, with key sources like Sungai Muda nearing critical levels.

National Water Services Commission (SPAN) chairman Charles Santiago called on the public to cut shower times by half and avoid daily car washes to conserve water.

He warned that excessive habits are draining millions of litres weekly, noting that washing one million cars could consume up to 25 million litres.

Malaysians currently use about 201 litres per person daily, exceeding global recommendations. With dry conditions expected to persist until June.

The public is advised to conserve water while staying adequately hydrated.
