KUALA LUMPUR, April 9 — Gerakan Masyarakat Sivil Demi Negara has called on Parliament to amend the Road Transport Act 1987 to enforce a zero-tolerance policy on alcohol consumption for drivers.
In a memorandum dated April 6, the group proposed lowering the current 0.05% blood alcohol concentration (BAC) limit to 0.00%.
Arguing it would eliminate public confusion and strengthen enforcement clarity. The group cited global evidence from countries like Brazil and Vietnam.
Where stricter laws reduced road accidents and fatalities. It urged lawmakers to prioritise road safety, enhance public awareness.
And consider pilot implementation for commercial drivers, stressing that stricter regulations are essential to protect lives and align Malaysia with international best practices.
