GEORGE TOWN, April 10 — Chow Kon Yeow described the intention behind a cancelled Aidilfitri open house by Thean Hock Keong as “noble” but noted the approach raised sensitivities.
He said the issue was delicate as it involved a non-Muslim place of worship hosting a celebration associated with Islam, which could lead to public concern despite positive intentions.
Chow added that while many supported the idea of fostering unity, its execution required careful consideration.
The event was halted by the Penang Islamic Religious Affairs Department, which stated that Aidilfitri-related events require approval.
The temple has since complied and denied involvement in any replacement programme, emphasising its original goal of promoting harmony while avoiding further confusion.
