GEORGE TOWN, April 16 — Pathmanathan K announced that the federal government, through the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation.

Will implement five major water projects in Penang worth over RM800 million. The initiatives include a new Sungai Muda barrage, upgrades to the Expanded Mengkuang Dam.

And water resource developments in Sungai Kerian, alongside improvements in Teluk Bahang and a comprehensive water study.

He said the projects will enhance water security by increasing the Mengkuang Dam’s drawdown capacity from 600 million litres per day to 1,000 million litres during dry seasons and emergencies.

The upgrades will also improve raw water abstraction and dam refilling efficiency. Pathmanathan stressed that the projects complement Penang’s Water Contingency Plan 2030.

Reinforcing long-term resilience in a water-stressed state while supporting economic growth and sustainability.
