KUALA LUMPUR, April 17 — The parliamentary select committee reviewing the proposed separation of the Attorney-General and Public Prosecutor roles is working toward a “middle ground,” with a constitutional amendment expected to be tabled by June.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said discussions are ongoing with input from NGOs, civil society groups, and lawmakers.
Azalina said the main issue remains the appointment process for the Public Prosecutor, with differing views on ensuring independence while avoiding political influence.
She added that the committee is studying international models to balance accountability and Malaysia’s constitutional structure, with consensus needed for a two-thirds parliamentary majority.
