KOTA BHARU, April 18 — Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said 85 per cent of Malaysians are not affected by rising diesel prices as they continue to benefit from government subsidies.
Speaking at the opening of the new terminal at Sultan Ismail Petra Airport, he noted that only 15 per cent of the population faces market-rate fuel costs amid the ongoing global energy crisis.
He added that key sectors, including school buses and selected logistics transport, remain protected under subsidy schemes.
Anwar also said Petronas could explore negotiations with Russia to secure additional oil supply, citing Malaysia’s stable diplomatic ties.
He highlighted that early government diplomacy enabled national oil shipments to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, ensuring energy security.
He stressed that domestic needs remain the priority, with surplus supply only considered for international assistance.
