KUALA LUMPUR, March 10 – Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching said the number of requests to remove harmful online content has increased significantly, mainly due to gambling and scam-related activities.
The requests are issued by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to service providers as part of efforts to curb online threats. Gambling-related content accounted for 62 percent of all takedown requests.
Followed by scam-related content, including fake accounts and impersonation, at 21 percent, while offensive content made up seven percent. According to statistics, gambling-related takedown requests rose to 293,057 in 2025 from 196,510 in 2024.
Scam-related requests increased to 102,113, while offensive content reached 42,027. Authorities continue monitoring harmful content under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 and the Online Safety Act 2025.
