GEORGE TOWN, March 11 – The Penang Port Commission (PPC) has activated an emergency monitoring mechanism to safeguard supply chain resilience following escalating tensions in the Middle East.

PPC chairman Dato’ Yeoh Soon Hin said the conflict could impact global shipping, particularly through the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil supply.

Authorities are closely monitoring potential disruptions to cargo movements through Penang Port. Several major shipping lines have begun adjusting routes due to security concerns.

Which may lead to longer transit times, higher freight rates and increased insurance premiums. PPC is also prioritising essential cargo such as food and medical supplies while strengthening coordination with industry stakeholders.
