KUALA LUMPUR, August 21 — Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said Malaysia’s one-China policy remains unchanged following criticism from Taiwan over remarks in a recent Al Jazeera interview.
Anwar said the policy dates to former prime minister Abdul Razak Hussein, whose government established diplomatic relations with China in 1974.
Malaysia recognized the People’s Republic of China as China’s sole legal government under a joint communique that year.
Anwar said Malaysia continues to uphold the policy while seeking a peaceful approach. His clarification followed criticism from Taiwan after he described Taiwan as part of China during the interview.
There is no confirmed change to Malaysia’s formal one-China policy.
