MUADZAM SHAH, May 4 – With less than 12 hours to go before the campaign period for the Rompin parliamentary by-election ends, PAS, which previously targeted FELDA settlers, has now set its sights on the orang asli. PAS vice-president Datuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said in the final phase of the campaign, the party would try to shift its focus towards pressing issues faced by the orang asli.
“We were surprised because they had begun to come to our talks and so we are taking this last opportunity to reach out to them,” he said during a daily press conference at the PAS headquarters for the by-election here. On the campaign, Tuan Ibrahim said the PAS machinery was utilised to the maximum during the period, visiting all areas of the constituency. “Overall, our campaign ran smoothly, only one or two houses did not allow us to visit them, but no other problem arose during the campaign period,” he noted.
A total of 52,744 eligible voters in 38 districts will cast their ballots tomorrow, while 464 out of 545 early voters had already done so last Thursday. The Rompin by-election will see a straight fight between Barisan Nasional’s Datuk Hasan Arifin and PAS candidate Nazri Ahmad to fill the vacancy, following the death of incumbent Tan Sri Dr Jamaluddin Jarjis in a helicopter crash on April 4.
