GEORGETOWN, June 23 – Around 30 Umno members and their supporters led by Penang Umno secretary Datuk Musa Sheikh Fadzir, gathering at about 10.30am and stormed into the state government’s administrative office on level three of Komtar to hand over a protest memorandum to mayor Datuk Patahiyah Ismail.
After causing a scene, some of the protesters and supporters also set fire to two DAP flags and stomped on a printout of the MBPP logo on the ground floor after handing over the memorandum to the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) demanding answers over the removal of its Umno signboard.
“I would like to accused the local council of causing trouble and being dictatorial. We only want MBPP to answer our questions and explain why our structure with the Umno logo in front of Menara Umno was demolished despite us submitting an appeal on June 19 at 2pm but the enforcement unit took action just two hours later,”said State UMNO liaison committee secretary Datuk Musa Sheikh Fadzir during a press conference.
“The council attempted to remove the structure last Friday which was illegal as they had not applied for permit. They also have submitted an appeal to stop council from removing the structure so that they could apply for a permit. In the same, they didn’t even give us time to apply for a permit and despite submitting the appeal,” Datuk Musa Sheikh Fadzir claimed.
“They just came to remove the structure within 24 hours on Friday afternoon. Besides that, why does they gave Gerakan a 30-day period, is that because of Gerakan chairman is Teng Chang Yeow is a Chinese and the state Umno liaison chairman Datuk Seri Zainal Abidin Osman is a Malay, so that they only gave us 24-hour notice. I just wants MBPP and Patahiyah to explain the unfair action in removing the structure,” he claimed.
