KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 17 – The people have generally begun to accept the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) based on the drop in the number of complaints received by the Royal Malaysian Customs Department (JKDM) and the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry (KPDNKK).

According to the Finance Ministry, JKDM only recorded 572 complaints from July to September this year compared to 5,873 complaints from April to June this year. It said KPDNKK received 768 complaints from July to September this year compared to 10,370 complaints from April to June this year. It said this in a written answer to a question from Sim Tze Tzin (PKR-Bayan Baru) who wanted the Finance Minister to explain on the level of acceptance of Malaysians towards GST here on Monday.

According to the ministry, the decline in complaints was due to the improvement in the understanding of the consumers and traders, and the government expected the trend to continue. The government implemented the GST officially in April to replace two types of taxes, namely, the Sales Tax and Services Tax. GST is also implemented in more than 160 countries worldwide.
