KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 26 – Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor made a u-turn with regards to his earlier statement on limited media coverage at the upcoming party general assembly. He said he media will be allowed to cover the UMNO General Assembly next month after all.
“Don’t worry. We will give media access and they can get information. There will be guidelines for media as we are concerned by some who try to pit leaders against each other. I hope the media will not spin their reports as it will only stir things up. The decision was made to retain press coverage following feedback from the grassroots who wanted the proceedings to be broadcast live.,” he told reporters in a special interview today.
“We received plenty of feedback from around the country. We listened to their (grassroots’) views and decided to maintain the usual press coverage. We will allow press coverage because our party is the backbone of the government,” said Party secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said on Thursday.
“Yesterday that this year’s UMNO general assembly scheduled for Dec 8 to 12 would be a closed-door meeting without press coverage during the assembly, instead a press conference would be given daily by two of the party’s vice-presidents Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein. This was to prevent the media from twisting facts,” he told a press conference here.
