PETALING JAYA, Nov 28 – UMNO vice-president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has invited the UMNO Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to attend the opening of UMNO annual general assembly on next month. The former prime minister’s claims that the party is trying to gag him.
Zahid Hamidi told English-language daily The Star in an interview that he hoped Dr Mahathir would attend the event, as the party still respected the former UMNO leader. He said he is very sure that the letter of invitation will go out soon but whether Dr Mahathir accepts or not is for him to decide.
“I hoped Dr Mahathir would attend the event, as the party still respected the former UMNO leader. The majority of UMNO members still appreciate him but there is a line between respecting him and accepting his opinion – they are two different things,” Zahid was quoted as saying in the report here on Saturday.
Zahid said the general assembly will run from December 8 to December 12 because the delegates knew where to toe the line. He said it was up to the supreme council to decide whether Muhyiddin would deliver his usual winding-up speech. On Tuesday, the UMNO supreme council said Muhyiddin would not officiate the opening of the three wings’ assemblies, while Muhyiddin also declare that he voiced up on that day.
