KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 10 – Wanita UMNO has proposed to the government to set up a National Wanita Economic Action Council, with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak as chairman, to empower bumiputera women entrepreneurs.
Selangor Wanita UMNO Information chief Dr Zahrah A. Kadir, who is also Kuala Selangor Wanita UMNO chief said the council would ensure that all economic policies and decisions by the government involving women would be duly implemented.
She said the functions of the council would include formulating policies and initiatives to enhance the quality of life and participation of bumiputera women in the country’s economy. She said the council would be the prime mover in narrowing the economic divide and champion bumiputera women’s rights.
She said this at the movement’s meeting here Wednesday, in conjunction with the UMNO General Assembly 2015. Meanwhile, Jelutong Wanita UMNO chief Maimoon Mustaffa proposed during the debate on the motion, for 15 per cent or more, of annual government approved projects to be given to companies owned by women and monitored by the council. She also proposed that at least 15 per cent of government linked projects (GLC) be alloted to women-owned companies.
