KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 11 – UMNO has 3.53 million members, as of Wednesday, said party’s secretary-general, Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor. He said UMNO now had 21,502 branches nationwide and Sabah had the highest membership, at 54,770.
UMNO together with all its members would act as the backbone of the party to establish effective machinery to add more new membership, he said in his welcoming speech at the opening of the UMNO General Assembly 2015, here, yesterday. Tengku Adnan said even though UMNO had always been the target of provocation, accusations and the like, the party still remained relevant.
Batu Putih Darat in Libaran, Sabah is the branch with the highest number of new membership at 2,051, he said. Tengku Adnan said the increasing number of new membership in the branch had made Silam as the party division with the most number of members at 50,343. In addition, he said this year’s general assembly is also attended by 119 foreign delegates representing 33 parties from 21 countries.
Among the political parties are Communist Party of China; Parti Golkar, Indonesia; The Islamic Resistance Movement Palestin-Hamas, Palestin; Democratic People of Korea, South Korea; Parti Keadilan Sejahtera Indonesia; and Cambodian People’s Party, Cambodia. He said the five-day general assembly, beginning Tuesday, received media coverage from 68 registered agencies comprising 455 local and 13 foreign media with 1,778 crew.
