PETALING JAYA, DEC 12 – Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin says he has never shirked his responsibilities as Umno deputy president, especially when it came to helping party leader Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak discharge his duties. He said he appreciate the president’s reminder that the responsibility of the deputy president under the Umno constitution is to help the president.
The former deputy prime minister said that is what he have done all this while. He said in response to Najib’s policy speech at the Umno general assembly Thursday. Muhyiddin explained that he helped Najib mobilise Umno and BN during general elections, by-elections as well as helping him ensure the smooth management and administration of Umno, among other party issues.
He said that the mandate to help the President, never did I ignore that. He said that as Umno deputy president, he had heard complaints from grassroots on issues related to the president and had advised Najib to listen to their “voices” and resolve the situation.
After doing this, Muhyiddin claimed he was excluded and barred from performing his tasks and responsibilities as deputy president. In Islam, Muhyiddin said they are required to be obedient and loyal to the leader. He also added that this was mentioned in Najib’s keynote speech.
He said the leaders who must be obeyed are those who obey the commands of Allah, are trustworthy, honest, have integrity and are clean, as well as keep away from wrongdoing. He concluded by expressing his hope that the debates taking place during the ongoing Umno general assembly will touch on the important matters that will “bring back the rakyat’s trust in Umno”. He also added that the debate with honesty, sincerity and truth.
