BAYAN LEPAS, Dec 13 – About 1,000 fishermen from 14 shallow sea fisherman had hold a peaceful protest at Pantai Sungai Batu here over the state’s proposed land reclamation involving thousands of hectares. The protest was held on Sunday morning which the fishermen was held up placards and banner at the protest, which read; “Tambakan Laut Kejam” (land reclamation is cruel) and “Jangan Layan Kami Macam Sampah” (Do not treat us like rubbish).
It was reported that the proposed land reclamation, which would allegedly help fund the state government’s massive Master Transport Plan (MTP), would see the construction of two man-made island was about 2,000 acres and 1,300 acres respectively, with additional areas that may be identified to reclaim another 800 acre island which next to the two larger islands which some 300 meters from the shores of Teluk Kumbar, Gertak Sanggul and Bayan Lepas.
