KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 13 – Concerned with the action of some quarters in insulting and belittling Islam, several UMNO delegates yesterday called for aggressive and firm action by the government to address the problem. Penang UMNO representative Datuk Ahmad Darus said the government should take stern action against those who insulted Islam to stop quarters from further ridiculing the religion.
“It is now viral on the Internet of postings which insult Islam. As the biggest party of the Malays, UMNO should ensure the sanctity of Islam continued to be protected,” Ahmad, who is Kepala Batas UMNO division secretary said when supporting the motion on religion and education at the UMNO general assembly Saturday.
Meanwhile, Kelantan UMNO representative Zaki Muhammad said UMNO should confront the retired civil group, G25, which had created a controversy with its suggestion for the abolishment of the Islamic Development Department (Jakim) and a few syariah laws.
“Islam is challenged by our own people, the G25, who we know are Malays and Muslims. Delegates should play a proactive role to curb the spread of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) phenomenon and to not leave the responsibility on the Islamic Religious Department alone,” said the Kuala Krai UMNO divisional committee member.
Meanwhile, a Wanita UMNO delegate, Rahemah Idris had also been suggested that the government to appoint more women syariah judges and bailiffs, as well as special lawyers to look into the welfare of the children whose parents were in the process of divorce.
